I know God will not be boxed in, but I’m always looking for formulas…simple things that work real well. Several years ago, I found the “recipe” for being in God’s will. In my humble opinion, there is no wealthier place than “being in God’s will.” It’s just three things: 1. Rejoice all the time, 2. Pray all the time, and 3. Be thankful all the time.

Rejoice, pray, and be thankful…try it if you want to be wealthy.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Are you content?

I feel our culture is SO into our stuff, that often times it's difficult to be content.

We constantly long for stuff. We covet stuff at the mall or on the Internet. We seek to get better and better stuff. We try to get more stuff to add to our stuff. We dream about the stuff we don't have. We get loans or use credit cards to buy stuff we can't afford.

I'm not throwing stones, I love stuff too!

But once in a while, I take a step back and look at the stuff I already have......food, shelter, clothes.
Then I try to be content with what I already have, rather than long for what I don't.

Now if only I could do it more often.

GOOD Choices in Debt

So you’re up to your eyeballs in debt.

I have a close friend who was bitten by a shark.....it looked like he would lose his leg, wouldn’t work again, and would never surf again. It would have been really easy for him to turn bitter. Instead, through his journey of recovery, he CHOSE gratefulness. Today, he’s strong as ever, working, surfing, and is a HUGE inspiration in my life…because he made good choices along the way.

So what are the “GOOD” choices in your debt? They are you CAN choose to get out of it…you CAN choose to manage your spending…you CAN choose to spend less than you make…you CAN choose to find contentment in the stuff you already have…you CAN choose to have financial freedom if you use discipline and control (budget). All choices you need to make.

Unlike most people’s debt, my friend never chose to get bitten by a shark. And unlike most, he made lemonade out of lemons. He considered the attack a “wake up call” from God, and focused on the important things in his life….his family. He overcame though a series of good choices.

The choices are yours.

Creating Financial Peace & Freedom

The car breaks down, the kids need braces, the plumbing leaks, you need to get a gift for a birthday or wedding.

When stuff happens, having some savings (at least $1,000) allows us to have financial peace & freedom. Savings allow us to cover the stuff instead of exasperating the problem by going into further debt.

For most of my adult life, I haven't had savings. I failed to equate my daily choices with robbing me of my financial peace. In other words, all those happy meals and value meals prevented me from building a financial peace & freedom fund (savings).

"HOW CAN?!?! I'm already in debt! How can I save?!"
+Can you give up one family fast food meal a week (about $25)? That's $100 a month into savings.
+Could you possibly catch the bus to work? Choke savings!
+How much do you pay for your cell phone plan? Funny how we could live without it growing up.
+Work part-time? Give up some time to gain peace and freedom....good deal.

I'm guessing if you did just two of the above, you could have financial peace & freedom ($1,000 in savings) in just 3-6 months.

The choice is yours. What do you want? Peace & freedom or more bondage (debt)?

Move from Debt to Wealth

Debt is (usually) bad...it's bondage.

If you have debt, you are bound to your debtor (credit card co., bank, etc.). Debt takes away your freedom and puts you in bondage. Simply put, when you wake up to go to work tomorrow, it's not to earn money for yourself, but to pay off your debtors.

So how do you get out of debt? Simple:

1. Spend less than you make (stop using debt, especially credit cards).
2. Be happy with what you have.

"But I can barely get by with my salary...I need to use my credit cards to survive."
Then you need to separate your needs from your wants. If you really want financial freedom, you need to eliminate all the wants from you spending habits.....the Starbucks, fast food (yes, you can survive on just sandwiches), designer anything, extra surfboard (that's my thing), and the list goes on and on.

Find contentment in the stuff you already have. Don't listen to Corporate America, who constantly tries to convince you that you need the newest this or that to be happy. Don't listen to our materialistic society that dictates how you have to dress to be "cool." Ignore your neighbor who just bought that shiny new BMW....they'll probably have a $600/month bondage for the next six years. Buying all that stuff just brings temporary happiness and long-long lasting bondage.
Note: BMWs are fine if you're debt free :)

I don't know about you, but I want freedom......NOT BONDAGE!

Get 'Mo Money

My God is kinda funny kine....

Everything I want to do, He don't want me to do.

Everything I don't want to do, He wants me to do.

By nature, I like to hold on to my stuff (possessions, time, money, skills, pride, etc.). But He always wants me to give it away. "I like my stuff," I protest. "Give it away," He says.

Then I learned how His economy works.....I've heard it explained this way:

We tend to hold tightly to our stuff, sorta like a closed fist. He wants us to freely give (within reason of course), sorta like an open hand.

When our hand is clenched in a tight fist, we are unable to receive the stuff He want to give us (the blessings). But when our hand is open, we are able to receive the abundance that He LOVES to give his children.

Let go.....Let God!
